Experience the escape from slavery with the African American Museum of Iowa. We are excited to bring back our Journey to Freedom event which simulates the escape from slavery on Iowa’s Underground Railroad. Participants will travel back in time to the 1850’s where they will become a runaway slave traveling north to Canada. While on your journey, you will encounter costumed actors who will serve as slave catchers, overseers, farmers, and abolitionists. Some might help you escape from freedom while others may threaten to return you to bondage. Learn to survive in the wild by navigating with stars, stay hidden while speaking in code, and see if you have what it takes to make it to freedom.
Due to the subject matter, this event is best suited for children 8+. This will be outdoors! Please wear appropriate clothing, closed toe shoes, and be prepared to walk on uneven terrain. Sunscreen, bug spray, and a full water bottle are recommended.
