Preservation. Education. Conversations.

The African American Museum of Iowa is the only museum in the state dedicated exclusively to preserving Iowa’s African American history. It is the place where conversations start around issues of community, race, and social justice for those who seek to expand their knowledge and share their interests. As a statewide organization, we envision building communities that come together to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of Iowa’s African American history and culture through conversation, engagement, and reflection.

In today’s world, it is essential to ensure that every voice is heard and understood. We want to make sure that people in communities across the state have the opportunity to hear the stories of Iowa’s black history, not only for a better understanding of Iowa’s past, but to ensure our state’s future success. You can help share those stories by joining in our mission to preserve, educate, and teach Iowa’s black history. Come be a part of the most forward-thinking museum in Iowa.
