The AAMI is proud to announce that we have received funding through the Creating Safe, Equitable and Thriving Communities fund via the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to bring Humanize My Hoodie to the Museum for a special one-day exhibit on May 21.
Humanize My Hoodie is a project of Born Leaders United, a fashion brand founded by André Wright. The project seeks to destigmatize styles of clothing often associated with people of color through art and photography.
This one-day exhibit will feature photography from the Humanize My Hoodie traveling exhibit along with new photos featuring students from Metro High School. The exhibit will be available to view from 10 AM to 8 PM and is included with regular Museum admission. Exhibit patrons will be able to purchase Humanize My Hoodie gear and speak with founders, André Wright and Jason Sole.
From the BLU Website:
“The senseless killing of people of color has spurred conversations about society’s perception of the hoodie. Simply put: if you are black and you are wearing a hoodie, YOU ARE CONSIDERED A THREAT. We want you to help us DE-STIGMATIZE clothing trends associated with people of color. The Humanize My Hoodie Project is a BORN LEADERS UNITED capsule collection. We seek to further the discussion with hoodies that seek to dismantle the stigma associated with clothing.”
