Due to unforeseen circumstances and potential bad weather, we have decided to cancel this year’s Journey to Freedom event. Next year we will be introducing a new program based on research completed by a University of Iowa PhD candidate that we hope will give attendees an even greater educational experience than our past programs. We hope that you will be able to join us next fall.

Experience the escape from slavery with the African American Museum of Iowa. Participants will travel back in time to the 1850’s where they will become a runaway slave traveling north to Canada. While on your journey, you will encounter costumed actors who will serve as slave catchers, overseers, farmers, and abolitionists. Some might help you escape from freedom while others may threaten to return you to bondage. Learn to navigate with the stars, make fires necessary for survival, stay hidden while speaking in code, and see if you have what it takes to make it to freedom.
