Experience the escape from slavery with the African American Museum of Iowa. Participants will travel back in time to the 1850’s where they will become a runaway slave traveling north to Canada. While on your journey, you will encounter costumed actors who will serve as slave catchers, overseers, farmers, and abolitionists. Some might help you escape from freedom while others may threaten to return you to bondage. Learn to navigate with the stars, make fires necessary for survival, stay hidden while speaking in code, and see if you have what it takes to make it to freedom.
This year’s Journey to Freedom event will take place in three rotations. Registration is required for all participants. A $5 registration fee applies for each participant.
