Consolidation also sponsored the Buxton Wonders, a mostly African
American baseball team. Druggist B.F. Cooper, managed the Buxton
team from 1900-1914. The highly regarded Wonders played many neighboring
teams. In the early 20th century most baseball teams were segregated.
By 1914, the Wonders had three white players, a highly unusual situation
for the time period.
