Buxton had two YMCAs. One building housed a gym, a library, a reading room, and an auditorium. The second YMCA, built for boys, contained an indoor swimming pool, which was quite unusual for the time. The first YMCA was originally built just for African Americans, but eventually was used by everyone. It was built in 1904 for $20,000. Twelve thousand dollars of this sum was supplied by Consolidation: most of the remainder was supplied by officials from either Consolidation or the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. When it was built, the second, was the only YMCA in the United States built just for boys.
